Bridging Gaps, Building Community: Hadi Hafiz's Vision for Georgetown Qatar

As an upcoming first-year student at Georgetown University in Qatar, Hadi Hafiz has ambitious plans to make a big impact on the student community if elected to the Student Government Association (SGA). Despite being new to the university, Hafiz brings a wealth of relevant experience and a deep commitment to promoting unity and academic excellence.

Hafiz describes himself as a "musician and former athlete" with a background in music theory and performance. He has considerable experience organizing concerts and working with diverse groups of people, skills that he believes will translate well to the demands of student government. Hafiz recounts one of his first major performances, where he helped put together a program celebrating Palestinian culture at Georgetown three years ago. This experience, he says, allowed him to "engage with the crowd" and "take in their opinions" - abilities that will serve him well in a representative role.

Hafiz's multicultural upbringing as a Syrian-Palestinian has also shaped his perspective. Having lived in Europe, Jordan, and Armenia, in addition to Qatar, he has a nuanced understanding of different cultural norms and values. Hafiz believes this background will enable him to "bridge between cultures and bring something to the table that everyone has" at the diverse Georgetown campus.

As a future SGA member, Hafiz aims to be a unifying force, helping new students from abroad acclimate to life in Doha and fostering a sense of community across all segments of the student body. He envisions organizing events and activities to familiarize first-year students with Qatari culture and the Georgetown campus, as well as facilitating open dialogues between students and professors. Hafiz is running on a joint ticket with Hala, a Moroccan-American student who has lived in the United States for most of her life. Hafiz believes their complementary backgrounds will allow them to effectively advocate for all students, whether they are adjusting to a new environment or seeking to maximize their academic experience.

Above all, Hafiz is driven by a desire to help his fellow students succeed. He wants to "make sure that as a group, we move as one" and that every member of the Georgetown community, regardless of their origin or background, feels welcomed and empowered. With his breadth of experience, collaborative spirit, and genuine care for his peers, Hafiz is poised to be a transformative figure in the SGA.
